STOLEN - American Indian Jewelry - Laguna Beach, CA

Numerous American Indian Jewelry items were stolen from a Laguna Beach, CA Gallery on or about
January 22, 2012

On 1-22-12 in an early morning window smash and grab theft, many items of Navajo, Pueblo and Taxco jewelry were stolen from Len Wood’s Indian Territory gallery in Laguna Beach California. The reversible “spinner style” Marie Francisco belt/necklace/bracelet shown in the photos and several trays of other jewelry were stolen.

A squash style necklace with eight silver Liberty dollars and a turquoise stone set in the sandcast naja is shown in the two attached photos from a similar theft approximately four weeks earlier on approx. 12-27-11. (see photos) A more typical squash blossom necklace with silver leaf motifs on each side of each stone was among other mostly jewelry items also taken. (see photos)

STOLEN - 2 Antique Navajo Textiles - Santa Fe, NM

Two antique Navajo weavings were stolen from a Santa Fe, NM gallery on December 26, 2011. 

The missing weavings are described by the gallery as:

  • 71″x60″ 1870 Late Classic Chief’s Wearing Blanket (left)
  • 48″x66″ 1880 Banded Wearing Blanket (right)

STOLEN - Pre-historic Pottery - Scottsdale, AZ

A piece of Pre-historic Pottery was stolen from a Scottsdale, AZ Gallery between
Dec. 10 and Dec. 24, 2011

Kaolin painted jaguar with red spots rids atop of a large bird in flight. The jaguar’s claws are holding onto the breast of the bird and his tail is securely wrapped around the tail of the bird to hold on. The bird’s entire body is painted in a very rare light purple paint and head painted red. Height: 7.5 inches & Length: 9.0 inches, ca. 0 BC – 200 AD.

STOLEN - Navajo Jewelry - Santa Fe, NM

Three pieces of antique Navajo jewelry were stolen from a Santa Fe gallery on December 15, 2011. 

A few days later, additional items were found to have been be taken during the same theft.

STOLEN - Quimbaya Pectoral - Scottsdale, AZ

A Quimbaya Pectoral is missing from a Scottsdale, AZ Gallery. 

 Quimbaya Pectoral, ca. A.D. 500-1000, diameter 7 3/4in (19.5cm), gold, finely hammered and cut into a circular domed form and pierced four times for attachment, with finely raised double-row dotted pattern around the edge. 
Removed without permission from the gallery. We are not sure exactly when it was stolen, sometime over the last six months. Attached is an image of the piece. STOLEN - Loloma Jewelry - Santa Fe, NM

Seven major Loloma jewelry pieces and a similar Richard Chavez gold ring were stolen from a Santa Fe, NM Home circa August 31, 2011.

Many pieces have been recovered. The remaining missing pieces are pictured and described below:

  1. Very large bracelet of silver. Would be signed Loloma. Length 1.75”. Pictured in the Loloma Book. See photo .
  2. The final stolen item is a Richard Chavez ring. Ring, 14kt gold, green jade (almost triangular in shape) with black jade, coral and turquoise accents. Signed. See photo.

A 19th century Plains beaded knife sheath with added deer antler handled knife was stolen from the booth of Fred Bauer Antiques, an exhibitor at the Great Southwest Antique Show in Albuquerque, NM on August 6, 2011. A sketch is posted below:

STOLEN - Various Native American Items - Tucson, AZ

A number of items were stolen from a home in Tucson, Arizona
June 2011

  • An Apache pitch-covered water basket, purchased on the San Carlos Reservation outside of Miami, AZ, in 1939;
  • A shallow, medium-sized Hopi bowl with a white interior with black-and-white design and an orange/brown slip exterior;
  • A Tohono O’odham basket tray with indented concentric circular design;
  • A Navajo 1940’s silver men’s bracelet;
  • A brown, cream, and red beaded necklace (unknown tribal origin);
  • A Navajo sand-cast silver and turquoise belt bucket on a leather and snakeskin belt (the belt was made in the late 1960s/early 1970s; the buckle pre-dates the belt but I do not have a more precise date estimate).

STOLEN - Iroquois Pipe - Rochester, NY

An Iroquois Pipe was stolen from a Rochester, NY museum in April, 2011

An Iroquois clay smoking pipe with open mouth bird, c. 1670 is missing from the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC). The pipe is labeled with the catalog number 10197/216. A rifle case was stolen from a Damariscotta, ME gallery on November 9, 2010

An antique Native American bead-decorated and fringed hide rifle case (approximately 36”-42” long) containing an antique single gauge shotgun was stolen from an antiques gallery in coastal Maine on November 9, 2010. A Zuni Olla circa 1920 was stolen from a Tucson, AZ gallery on or about October 6, 2010

Please be on the lookout for a stolen Zuni Olla, circa 1920. The olla is approximately the size of a large cantelope. A Ganado rug was stolen from a Tucson, AZ shop on or about September 22, 2010

Zuni Needlepoint Concho Belt Stolen from Gallup, NM Motel
April 15, 2010

ATADA member Pat Harrington left a concho belt in his room at a Gallup, NM motel on the evening of April 15. He went to his car. When he returned a few minutes later, the belt was gone.

STOLEN - Sculpture & Other Art - Phoenix, AZ

Artist’s Trailer Stolen from Phoenix, AZ Hotel
March 4, 2010

Cliff Fragua’s trailer containing several statues and other art was stolen during the night of March 3-4, 2010. In it was about $5,000 worth of jewelry and six sculptures — two bronzes and four stone pieces. 

The trailer itself was a white Haulmark enclosed trailer with a door on the side and a single drop ramp in the back. The fenders are mismatched. It is registered in California (permanent plate which is white.)
